MUFON and other UFO Organizations

MUFON was established as the Midwest UFO Network in Quincy, Illinois, on May 30, 1969, by Walter H. Andrus, Allen Utke, John Schuessler, and other scientific-minded researchers. Most of MUFON's early members had earlier been associated with APRO (Aerial Phenomena Research Organization).

The organization now has more than 3,000 members worldwide, with a majority of its membership base situated in the continental United States. MUFON operates a worldwide network of regional directors for field investigations of UFO sightings reports, holds an annual international symposium and publishes the monthly MUFON UFO Journal.

The stated mission of MUFON is the scientific study of UFOs for the benefit of humanity through investigations, research and education.

Along with CUFOS (the J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies) and FUFOR (the Fund for UFO Research), MUFON is part of the UFO Research Coalition, a collaborative effort by the three main UFO investigative organizations in the US whose goal is to share personnel and other research resources, and to fund and promote the scientific study of the UFO phenomenon.

MUFON is currently headquartered in Fort Collins, Colorado under the direction of James Carrion. The current MUFON of Ohio was born out of the MidOhio Research Associates (MORA) and continues to be headed by William E. Jones. MORA was a UFO study group formed in 1990 in central Ohio. In 1999 MORA was renamed, incorporated and reorganized as the Mutual UFO Network of Ohio to affiliate the organization with the national Mutual UFO Network (MUFON).

History

As of 1973, Larry Moyers (of Akron, Ohio) was the State Director[4]. Famous Ufologists Leonard H. Stringfield, Kenny Young, and Donnie Blessing have served as State Section Directors for Southwestern Ohio.

Publications

Ohio UFO Notebook - At least 23 issues, beginning before July 1992 and ending in 2002. In some instances, for example combined issue four and five, the Ohio UFO Notebook is coupled with the Mutual UFO Network of Ohio Newsletter, but MORA remains the publisher. We could not, in all honesty, have a site about Awakening Minds without including a section on UFO phenomena. For years, the question of whether or not we are alone in this universe has continued to perplex our collective thinking. As more and more research is done on this very controversial subject, the smaller and smaller our universe seems to become. The more we peer into the darkest recesses of space, the more we realize the truth of the matter, which is, we cannot possibly be alone.

The collective belief that we are alone in this universe has always been the common thinking. Anyone attempting to say otherwise has been chastised or shunned by the media, and even friends and family. However, no matter how much the general consensus may try to dampen the spirits of this rebellious few, they continue to forge forward with their belief that we are not alone.

So… to get a small idea of what this fringe movement is all about, let’s start at the beginning of their argument and focus on the underlying current that drives this belief. Let’s start by talking about our history. Just looking at the way we as humans have behaved over the span of our existence lends to the fact of how wrong we have been about so many things. In fact, we as a race of beings have gotten it wrong with just about everything, which helps to solidify how preposterous this idea of us being alone in the universe really is. All we have to do is look back at our own human history. Throughout history, the human ego has never left any room for anything else other than itself. For centuries, whole civilization groups thought that they were the only people inhabiting the earth. However, as people learned to travel more efficiently, they migrated further from their immediate inhabited areas. Whether it was to find better grazing land for their animals, or for more spiritual reasons such as the search for what they believed to be the ends of the earth, travel became essential for early man. But a funny thing happened along the way. They did not, in fact, run into the ends of the world; they ended up running into other people. And as time passed, and as people learned to traverse the oceans, once again, the very people who thought they were alone in the world were proven wrong as they stumbled onto whole other social groups on whole other continents.

This basic thought process doesn't just stop with the human experience; we also impose it onto things bigger than us, such as the vastness of the cosmos. For centuries, humans thought that the earth was the center of the universe and that the sun and planets and the stars were circling around our little blue planet. However, as technology advanced and we learned to see past our own atmosphere, we soon learned that our little blue planet was just a small part of a larger celestial engine, which is our solar system, once again proving everyone wrong. For years we were absolutely certain, without a shadow of a doubt, that the furthest reaches of space were confined to our small little galaxy. Once again, through the advancement of technology, we were proven wrong again. Of course, now we know that our galaxy is one of hundreds of thousands of galaxies in an ever-expanding universe.

As you can see, this pattern of thought continues to skew our thinking even to this day. After getting it wrong so many times, you would think that we humans would get the picture. You would think that we would learn to be more humble about things we know nothing about, even for the fact that our own history has shown us that our first thoughts on what we think to be factually true are usually not. Sadly this is not the case, even with something as large as space. With all these advancements in science and social collective knowledge, you would think that we would give the unknown a major benefit of doubt. Unfortunately, the majority of the population somehow still seems to think that we are the only ones within the massiveness of space. As I mentioned before, how could we, as an awakened, advanced race of beings, after being proven wrong so many times, still believe and trust what can only be described as our ever growing massive egos, for it is our self-centeredness that fuels this thought process.

All it goes to show is that for the human race, our self-centeredness is truly bigger than anything else we know. The answer to the question of whether we are alone in this universe is absolutely 100% NO…we are not alone! One day, as we slowly learn to travel into and through space, we will inevitably run into other beings, just as we did centuries ago here on earth.

I have a theory about how and why I believe this is all true, and I like to use the analogy of the Ant Hill theory. Even though I’m not the first person to use this analogy, I think I bring some different, more revealing ideas to this theory. The theory is as follows.

Think about a lonely ant hill and its complex social structure. A structure we, as humans, have always admired, especially since it appears in such a lesser species. All these ants work under a social structure, going about their everyday business without much to do with anything else in the world. They only interact with the outside world for only one purpose, and that is to further their inherent goals of survival. By securing the daily survival of the colony they, in turn, guarantee the propagation and continuation of their species and the subsequent growth of their colony. To this inherent survival behavior there is no divergence, making anything that happens around them outside their own world irrelevant and, more then likely from their prospective, misunderstood.

We work with a similar social structural behavior as well. Think about it, we go about our daily business without much to do with anything else in the world. Can you start to see where I’m going with this idea? How many times have we passed ant hills without giving them a second thought? And think about the ant hill; they must see hundreds of things pass them by every day, not knowing or really caring what they are. Now think of are little blue planet as that small little ant hill in the middle of our gigantic enormous universe. How many things or beings have passed us by without them or us even paying attention to each other? Is it possible that the very beings we long to find have been there the whole time? We just can't recognize them because of our limited technology and understanding. We need to also remember that it has only been within the last hundred years that our technology started to define and expand us as a species. The mere fact that we've only had computers or the Internet for the last 40 to 50 years should be enough to humble us as a technologically advanced race. We have only just begun and we are in the infancy of a type 2 race. This is why it is so important for all of us to realize that no matter how much we may be advancing technologically, the truth is that it is only within the confines of our small little ant hill. By this very thinking you can see how foolish it would be to somehow think that we are the most advanced beings in our known cosmos. After acknowledging this idea, skeptics commonly ask this question: If we are not the only advanced beings in the universe, then why haven't they contacted us?

To answer that question, I go back to the analogy of the ant hill. Imagine, if you will, that you were an ant, and that you were looking for proof of life. You, as an ant, could be thinking to yourself, “If we are not alone, why haven't we been contacted yet?” Unbeknownst to you, an ant, the world is teeming with life all around you. But because of the differences in communication, and not to mention the differences in technology that we, as different species, may have, we are not able to relevantly acknowledge each other.

Now let’s look at it in reverse. Remember, we, as the more advanced species on this earth, never even think twice about trying to communicate with ants on an ant hill. Looking at this fact even closer, we can see there are many different reasons why we would not even attempt to communicate with ants. One of the obvious reasons would be that they are a lesser species and the time and effort needed to communicate with them, not to mention the lack of technology, would prove to be a monumental task. And the expense in time and effort would outweigh the benefits of what we would get from actually obtaining communication with the ants. So now think of us as the ants again. There may be a higher form of life out there, but for them to take the time to learn to communicate with us would be more of a hassle for them, and they wouldn’t get anything worthwhile from communicating with us. Furthermore, what could we possibly teach them? After all, they would have a much higher form of existence and knowledge, just like us with the ants.

This is not to say that we are not important, because we must be important to be part of the cosmos. The fact is that we may just not be high enough on the species pecking-order to matter much. If the cosmos is ruled by patterns, then the patterns we experience here on earth must exist on a larger scale throughout the universe. And so it is that our little blue planet could just be a microcosm of what is really going on in the universe, and the answer to all our questions have been in front of our noses the whole time. Here we are, wondering why no one communicates with us and we literally could be that lesser species or life form not worthy of first contact. Keep in mind that higher organisms may just not have the time, technology or need to communicate with us; however that doesn’t mean that they are not out there. All this time, more advanced civilizations, species or organisms could have been right next to us and we would never even know it. So the next time you gaze into the night sky and wonder how unique and alone we may be, think of the ant pile and think about how alone and unique they must think they are…and then, from our prospective, think about how silly and inconsequential we think the ants are. So you can only imagine how silly and inconsequential we as an emerging hominoid race must seem to a higher form of life. We really need to seriously get over ourselves…!!!

It is this very idea that leads me to create this page on UFO phenomena. It is with great anticipation that I will continue researching and bringing to you, our readers, the most up-to-date and provocative UFO sightings available for viewing. The group, which was based in Tucson, Arizona but had many state branches, remained active until 1988.

APRO stressed scientific field investigations, and had a large staff of consulting Ph.D. scientists. A notable example was Dr. James E. McDonald of the University of Arizona, a well-known atmospheric physicist, and perhaps the leading scientific UFO researcher of his time. Another was Dr. James Harder of the University of California, Berkeley, a civil and hydraulic engineering professor, who acted as director of research from 1969-1982. McDonald and Harder were among six scientists who testified about UFOs before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Science and Astronautics in 1968, when they were conducting hearings on the subject.

Though any UFO-related group attracts a number of uncritical enthusiasts along with a small percentage of cranks, astronomer J. Allen Hynek (Hynek, 1972) cited APRO and NICAP as the two best civilian UFO groups of their time, comprised largely of sober, serious minded people capable of valuable contributions to the subject. In 1969, a sizable portion of APRO's membership elected to form a new group, MUFON.

Travis Walton polygraph suppression

APRO's credibility took a major blow in the 1970s. Travis Walton claimed to have been abducted by a UFO in Arizona. He was missing for several days, and returned amid a widespread police search and publicity. APRO, in conjunction with the National Enquirer arranged for a polygraph, which suggested Walton was lying about his claims. APRO, Walton and the Enquirer decided to suppress the polygraph results--the examiner was biased, they said, and unprofessional. Walton passed another polygraph, which was publicised. A few months later, Philip Klass--long skeptical of Walton's claims--uncovered the initial polygraph results. UFO researcher Jerome Clark suggests that even if the charges of bias were accurate, the way APRO suppressed the polygraph was "indefensible".
